Behind the Scenes

Throw-back... Wednesday?

Inspired by the 60s monster TV shows & classic cinema of the 30s, 40s & 50s, "Before You" is a tribute to the Golden Age of Hollywood.  In collaboration with artist Cheyenne Jackson & director Nick Everhart, the project utilized everything from miniature & forced perspective sets to green screen & hand animation.

The guys really let me go all out on this one.  Beyond compositing, I had the opportunity to design & pitch initial concepts, work closely with the practical modelers & supervise on-set.  Mimicking the old driving projections & Tim Burton kookiness was harder to pinpoint than you'd think!  Check out the BTS clip below for a unique perspective on one of the coolest projects to-date.

Poisonwood Test

An amazing DP once told me, "If you can't do it with 3 lights and a couple bounce cards, you haven't figured it out".  I keep this in mind each time I set up a comp.  Sure, it could be done with 70 nodes... but what if I can figure it out in 18?

Again, testing similar parameters as the "Apple Test", this setup was to play with texturing, focal range, lighting & contact with updated Nuke7 features.

Apple Test

Just a little fiddling with the some of the Nuke7 features... specifically projection and lighting.  The stem & falloff could use some love, but the point was to experiment with the new ModelBuilder, zDefocus & improved ScanlineRenderer's shadow casting/lighting.  I MAY be in love with the customizable filter type.
